All in good order now, sir! In fact Wilson specifically discusses the implications of Joyce's insistence on no apostrophe in the essay, so it was a thoughtless slip. I guess the combination of roasting sun and 3 euros for half an hour on the net take their toll on the finer points ;-)

Call me finiticky, but Joyce (and Burgess) made a big deal about the absence of the genitive apostrophe in Finnegans Wake. This is top of my list of unconscionable small errors.

Well, then I saw 1970's instead of 1970s, now that really does make my blood boil....

Ohhhhhkaaaayyyy.

Immediately prior to reading this I was gazing out of the window at the sparse late evening traffic passing by and enjoying the mellow effects of a wee smoke. Three large freight trucks passed by in apparent convy. All were identical "Nolan Transport" trucks. It sparked off a memory of you telling me (in Holyhead) about how amused you were that Yates referred to Bruno as "the Nolan".

Reminds me of the time I was driving to Birmingham for a Vehicle Derek rehearsal. I was listening to "Rock Bottom" by UFO and just as Michael Schenker was descending into yet more peals of paint-stripping guitar ecstasy, a van drove past me with "Schenker Distribution" written on it.
