Man, when this came out I was too young to really “get” what the hell she was doing here or to really see how sort of scared or apprehensive or something she looked during this performance. It was very chilling to watch again after all those years with a fresh perspective

I remember being surprised when I caught the footage of her appearance at the Dylan memorial concert after this Saturday Night Live appearance (a decade after the event). The standard story is that she got booed, failed to rise to the challenge and kind of wimped out. In reality, to me, her appearance there was every bit as gutsy and moving as this – the cracks of fragility in her anger just made it more powerful, because no one on her level allows that much to be shown on stages that big.
Interesting to read that she later said she thought the act was “the gesture of a girl rebel”, but was ultimately unrepentant, quoting Saint Augustine: “Anger is the first step towards courage.”
