i am disappointed that treadwell gave my children such a view of bears.........

i laughed when i first heard he had been eaten, but i had to stop laughing long enough to explain what happened in terms that my eight-year-old would understand.......and undo the damage his teacher has done by commenting that it was somehow man`s fault that bears eat them because we are damaging the environment.

Happy tangents, Brooke! Go straight for the David Kidner book after the film... They both fell into my life at the same time, and fitted together in a fascinating way. A great word/image double-bill :-)

Thanks for the excellent thoughts, which will be rolling around and spawning all sorts of tangeants in me for days to come. I'll be checking out this film 'asap'. This is the first I've heard of it.

My impression from the film was that Treadwell was severely deluded about the "threat" to the bears he lived with. Of course bears and too many other animals are under genuine threat - all the more reason to wonder why Treadwell devoted so much energy to particular bears that didn't seem to be under threat. He rather seemed to using the bears to protect himself from civilization.

That said, I'd be interested to know about any evidence that they were under threat, as I take Herzog's viewpoint with a pinch of salt, too.

How did you explain the situation to your kid? It must be such a task, not lying to children that you're raising as part of a culture in such denial about so many things...
