Review
Mary Midgley is one of those intellectuals who challenge rational orthodoxies by applying the intellect more consistently than her targets. Here, she hones in on the religious aspirations buried in the rhetoric of evolutionary science. Like John Gray, she acknowledges the irreducible reality of religion and mythical thought, and argues powerfully that we should recognize its reality consciously rather than unconsciously allow it to drive systems and ideologies ostensibly purged of non-rational perspectives. Not the water-tight, linear argument you might fantasize about wielding against Dawkins et al.—there’s always some form of non-linear perspective shift needed to see past rational orthodoxy. But, an important contribution to rational anti-scientism.
