War & the Noble Savage

War & the Noble Savage

A new study analyzing afresh the age-old debate: is the life of the savage “noble”, or “nasty, brutish and short”? Covers the anthropology and archaeology of war, primatology studies and the role of genetics, and the ecological impact of traditional cultures. More »

Archaeologies of Consciousness

Archaeologies of Consciousness

A long-overdue collection of my essays on prehistory. Revised, updated, with new illustrations and photographs, a full index, appendices, an in-depth introduction, and a foreword by rock’s foremost antiquarian, Julian Cope. More »

Dreamflesh Journal

Dreamflesh Journal

My dive back into print publishing, this journal gathers together an eclectic range of essays, interviews and art exploring altered states, healing, mythology and prehistory, all woven into the pressing ecopsychological fabric of our current planetary crises. More »

Head Over Heels

Head Over Heels (Donal Ruane)

I’ve been consulting more than collaborating, but Donal Ruane’s project to promote the healing potentials of altered states deserves a mention here. I built his website, which involved the honour of creating a gallery of Pablo Amaringo’s visionary art. I also muck in, conceptually and practically, here and there, with planning and staging Head Over Heels events, and enjoy my small bits of input into Donal’s film projects. Visit the website »

Past projects

Radio Savage Houndy Beasty

Radio Savage Houndy Beasty

Sonic tomfoolery on Leeds Student Radio (we’ve been kicked off since they realized we weren’t students and were insulting their sponsors) and occasional squat parties by meself, Mahalia, Adam and Merrick, and a host of bizarre guests. Visit the website »

The Devil & The Goddess

The Devil & The Goddess

I wrote this booklet in 1997, a more-or-less direct follow-up to my essay Dionysus Risen. It weaves various phenomena and ideas together in a partially research-driven, partially experience-driven fragmentary narrative of thought that speculates about dualism, the body, the Devil & the Goddess… More »

Verbeia

Verbeia

The most comprehensive survey of this neglected Romano-Celtic river goddess available. Drawing on research from Victorian times to the present, I render new perspectives from etymology, folklore, archaeology and the local landscape. More »

Norlonto

Norlonto

In collaboration with Jim, Norlonto was intended as a thriving online publishing community, and a series of books on themes such as technology, space travel and body consciousness. It wound up merely being a really great website. In any case, it’s now no longer with us… More »

The Old Stones of Elmet

The Old Stones of Elmet by Paul Bennett

Paul Bennett was my roguish guide as I delved into the ‘earth mysteries’ of West Yorkshire. He’d amassed a huge amount of research into the pagan history of the area, but, being a happy slacker, hadn’t managed to publish anything that did justice to his fascinating research. I chipped in with my publishing experience, editing and designing this unique book, one of the most comprehensive (and cheekiest) local gazetteers around. Publishers Capall Bann took an age to get it out, but in the end it arrived. Grab it if you’re digging for interesting prehistory oop north. Buy the book »

Towards 2012

Towards 2012

Published over five themed parts, this was my attempt to express my intuitions and hopes regarding the idea that mass transformation is on the menu for the early 21st century. More »

The Unlimited Dream Company

The Unlimited Dream Company

This was my first self-publishing venture, forged with the trusty manual typewriter, Pritt-stick and illicit photocopying. Art, writings and ideas about dreams, synchronicity and related esoterica. More »
