Although my 1997 booklet The Devil & The Goddess: Meditations on Blood, Serpents & Androgyny has been available online for a while as a web page, as the booklet’s out of print and not to be reprinted, I thought I’d follow the recent Verbeia eBook with one of this dense, meandering little work; for easy printing and offline reading. There’s just the one version this time: an A4 format 1.12 MB PDF.

Just back from an auspicious day out. Visited Kennet Print in Devizes, who are ably handling the covers and colour pull-outs for the imminent first Dreamflesh Journal. Neil Mortimer—editor of the excellent but defunct 3rd Stone Magazine, and one of the editors of the forthcoming Time & Mind magazine that I hear rumbling over the horizon—works there, and gave me a fascinating walk through their printing process. It’s the first time I’ve been to see proofs for something I’ve published, and it’s both exciting and reassuring! Both the cover and the gloriously colourful Pablo Amaringo painting pull-out are looking wonderful. Kennet Print really have their eco-credentials sorted, too.

I’ve been listening to quite a few of the MP3s in the Future Hi Media Library recently. Mark Pesce is good for an enthused head-spin; and it’s been interesting to catch some Terence McKenna that I’ve never heard before. Especially in conjunction with guests, such as the incredible Nicole Maxwell. I’ve never heard McKenna’s long-time wife Kathleen Harrison speak before (she’s on the series at Future Hi titled “The Rites of Spring”), and it’s fascinating to hear her. Of course it’s highly amusing to hear McKenna get a gentle drubbing for running too far with his metaphors in the way only a spouse can manage.

Artist James Koehnline has just informed me that to raise funds, he’s having a print sale. Many of you will be familiar with James’ stunning neo-psychedelic collages from covers of books published by Autonomedia and records released by Axiom. He did the wonderful cover art for the Culture & Language part of Towards 2012, shown here.

I spoke in my recent review of John Gray’s Al Qaeda and What It Means to be Modern of “the delusory nature of the idea that we can remake human nature on rational foundations”. I’ve been thinking about this a bit recently.

I’ve just posted a new review, of John Gray’s brief study, Al Qaeda and What It Means to be Modern. The title seems to have been moulded a little by publishing opportunism; fair enough. The meat of the matter is the delusions that modern political currents, such as Marxism and free-market economics, have inherited from Christianity. Essential reading.

The recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah on the Lebanese border has seen the usual absence of depth and context in the majority of mainstream media coverage. Riding on unquestioned waves of habit and unconscious history, we’re usually satisfied with the sensational froth of righteousness, anger, vilification, violence, and devastation. Not to belittle the gravity of the feelings and suffering, of course; it’s just that the flat conception of “current affairs” is part of the problem.

I’m up late getting a website ready for someone in Australia who’s going to be up soon. Just had (and am still having) a pleasant diversion in the form of some kind of marimba-playing gathering in the communal back garden on my street. A wonderful sound to drift in the window…

Back in the mid-nineties (do shoot me if I say that more than once a year) I happened across a website by some people calling themselves Team Satan. They made crop circles. I’ve never been that interested in crop circles, despite my penchant for paranormality in the West Country, but I always thought Team Satan had the best perspective. They went out and made them. But rather than being wholly dismissive “we did it and fooled the New Agers” folk, they were open about the fact that they thought something strange was going on in them fields, and that their activities were an act of “taking part”.
