The Little Book of Demons

The Little Book of Demons

Review

9/10

Dukes never ceases his brilliance. This amicably small-format book is packed with his usual charm, humour, shrewd insight and deft twists of logic. In approaching demonology with the enlightened pragmatism of a jovial science teacher, he creates both a profound statement about living magically, and an extremely helpful volume for anyone who thinks that magic isn’t separate from everyday life—and that psychology is very poor if it doesn’t take a magical leap here and there. Dukes being Dukes, things never remain wholly in the personal realm, and he extends his analysis of demons out to the cultural and political sphere, always with fascinating results. If you’ve ever suspected the “pathetic fallacy” is neither pathetic nor a fallacy, this book will arm you well to move forward.
